In Austria, 22 white and 13 red grape varieties are approved for the production of "Qualitätswein" ("quality wine", or wine with protected designation of origin), "Prädikatswein" ("certified wine") or "Landwein". The red wine segment has doubled in size over the last two decades and currently accounts for one-third of the total Austrian wine-growing area of almost 46,000 ha.
Austria boasts an exceptional location for internationally-known varieties of wines such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Muskateller, Traminer, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Even more important is the portfolio of native grape varieties with Grüner Veltliner at the top - this variety alone makes up nearly a third of the total wine-growing area. Neuburger, Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, Roter Veltliner (white), Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Blauer Wildbacher (red) are particularly valued today.
